Hi, I'm Kev. I'm a thirty-seven year old web developer, married with three kids and living in the Midlands, UK. I'm also manic depressive (Bipolar). This blog discusses the issues surrounding my life as a manic depressive.

Recoup, renew, regroup

So, now I’ve stepped down from blogging at my other blog I took a bit of a break to decide whether I want to keep blogging here.

Obviously the answer was ‘yes’ as I’m doing it right now!

I attended the MDF convention in London recently and heard some interesting stuff on the nature and science behind manic depression. Most interesting to me was the way manic depression, autism, tourettes and other things known to bless my family were described as spectrum conditions within one vast, overreaching spectrum of mental differences. This is something I whole heartedly agree with as it makes scientific sense as well as appeals to my own opinions on the humanity of mental illness.

Yesterday I was pleased to attend the first set-up and planning meeting for a local self-help group for manic depressives and their kin/spouses etc. This was a project I’d been toying with the idea of instigating for some time as although I work in a big city where a group exists, I live in a big town where no such group exists. It was heartening to see so many people turn up last night and I think we have the basis of a good group.

But I still miss your other blog….necessary as it was to shut it down.

You might look over the pond at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for topics, structure etc.

There’s also the Child and Adolescent BiPolar Foundation

Cheers, my dear, to you & your lovely family.

I’m glad you attended the conference and got something from it.
You know, Kev, your voice is a unique and welcome presence in the world of blogs and cyberstuff. I strongly encourage you to explore the BP thing in the blogosphere.

I appologize that this is a bit far along from when you posted, but I just came across this blog today (via your Autism blog, and that yesterday via mom-nos)...

Anyway, I, too, have bipolar disorder, and have a child with “classic” autism, and , too, have for a long time suspected there is a relationship between the two. Autism spectrum disorders and general mood disorders have a deep history in my family, as do thought disorders, learning disabilities (the American meaning – dyslexia, NVLD, etc) and epilepsy. So many signs and symptoms seem to weave intermittently between autistic and non-autistic family members alike, that it has always just seemed more likely that there was a connection than not. Maybe because they are all neurologically based??

Of course, my counselor is always telling me I see connections in things where there are not really any, so, who knows.

Well, really, I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed reading over what you have written on both blogs, so thanks and I hope you keep on blogging.
