Taking Leave
I’ve just finished reading Taking Leave (US, CA).
Its written by Jeremy Thomas who co-authored the fab ‘You Don’t Have To Be Famous To Have Manic Depression’.
To say that I enjoyed this book would not be the right word. It was excellent, don’t get me wrong, but enjoy is not the right adjective. It made me wince, laugh and brought me out in a cold sweat in equal measure. Thomas is – of course – a manic depressive and this book is about a young mans slow, unstoppable swing from minor mania to depression and back to full blown, florid mania again.
The truth is that despite the fact that I am not in the recording industry, the similarities in thought patterns, rationale and reasoning – as well as the inexorable escalating mood swings and their destructive uncontrolled scything through relationships – are just too close for any real comfort. As a study of manic depression Taking Leave is brilliant. As a nice comfy read to curl up with – for me – its too prickly. that is not the authors fault, he has done his job perfectly. However, its just too unsettling for me to say that I enjoyed it. I battled through it, enjoying the highs vicariously and remembering the damage I have personally caused as I read about Tim’s destructive path.
Highly recommended but if you are manic depressive, I would be prepared to suffer a bit.

sounds good. I recently finished ‘an unquiet mind’ by Kay Redfield Jamison which was also fascinating.
“uncontrolled sycthing through relationsips” sounds outright borderline personality disordery! You have created the most hilarious Amish phrasing of life in Hollywood I have ever heard. Be a script writer!
you are so right about the borderline thing and what is going on in Hollywood. What is even funnier is you can talk to some of these people about this problem and they act all self aware and many will even say they are in therapy and then suddenly a week later they are out of therapy accusing their therapist of being crazy or a narcissist or whatever. Then a week later they, over something minor, go off on you and sythe you away. You think they would get exhausted with all the drama, especially those in their thirties and fourties, but they don’t. They even go after their landlords suing them for the hot water being five degrees too low(they measure it) and you name it. And as soon as they get their hands on money or what they are after as your the one standing in their way they don’t know you. So yeah, you know hollywood where the nexus of borderline and narcissistic personality disorders.
